By Manotick Messenger Staff

Ottawa Police are investigating after a shooting took place at a Manotick-area cemetery Friday afternoon.

In a press release sent out by Ottawa Police on the evening of July 8, they said the shooting took place at the Ottawa Muslim Cemetery on Manotick Station Road at around 2:45 pm.

They received multiple 911 calls saying that shots were fired.

The incident took place during a funeral for 24-year-old Abdulhamid Haji Ragab, who died in a homicide in the South end of the city earlier this week. Haji Ragab was killed just feet away from the Banff Avenue Community House. The accused, Chawn Lemieux, 23, appeared in court for that shooting earlier today.

Ottawa Police closed access to the cemetery as their investigation continues. They are now on the hunt for the suspected shooter.

A man was left with non-threatening injuries, and multiple ambulances called to the scene were cancelled before they arrived, according to Ottawa Paramedics. He was treated in hospital.

Police have asked people to avoid the area.

“Police delayed some individuals from leaving the area during the investigation and suspect search. We apologize for this inconvenience.,” the said in a press release. “We are speaking with community members to help individuals understand the approach by the police.”
